The excitement of the holidays has passed, and families question whether or not they should have adopted that pet in the spirit of Christmas. Some families may have discovered children allergic to dogs or cats, while others find that pet ownership simply doesn't suit them. The consciencious folks turn in their pets to shelters; the rest simply throw them out of the house, to fend for themselves until good Samaritans find the animals, rescue them and take them to one of the many shelters to hopefully be re-adopted.
This time of year, even when you live in a temperate climate such as in Las Vegas, is tough on pets. Shelters are straining to the max to contain the animals in their care and budgets are tight. Many prospective owners have already adopted, or are waiting until warmer weather to choose a new furry friend. There are no major sponsored pet adoption events until April.

Find Your Furry Valentine held on February 2, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will be the second annual event for dog and cat rescues to present their animals to the public for adoption and to raise funds for the year from craft sales and donations.
This event will fill a need for rescues to find prospective adopters and raise funds early in the year for the medical needs of their fostered animals. It will also increase awareness of the need to adopt homeless critters during the winter months. And it's not just for your usual domestic furry friends, either.
“Find Your Furry Valentine is a great community event for the entire family while providing an opportunity to raise critical funds for local rescues. If you are looking for a new fury family member, Find Your Furry Valentine allows prospective adopters to meet available pets in our community and begin the placement process. And if your four legged family is complete, the event features pet focused products and services” said Mary Sanders, President of the Senior Spaniel Rescue.
Senior Spaniel Rescue, Inc.’s mission is to place furry best friends with families that will love them unconditionally. The Senior Spaniel Rescue was formed by a group of local Springer lovers in February 2007 to help homeless and discarded older Springer Spaniels find new homes. It is an all-volunteer organization fully sponsored and supported through donations, craft sales and local veterinary donations of time and services.
All event funds stay in the community and help sustain the medical needs of Las Vegas fostered animals, while increasing awareness of the need to adopt homeless dogs, cats, pigs and donkeys during the brutal winter months when adoption rates and fundraising is lower.
The event will once again be held in the Bass Pro Shops parking lot, adjacent to the Silverton Hotel and Casino, and will feature pet friendly booths, crafts, raffles and prizes. The event will also host animal demonstrations and live local entertainment. Local food trucks will also be on hand for lunch and snacks.
