The cookie likely won’t crumble tonight when drag star Cookie Dough presents her annual Monster Diva Tribute at 10pm...perfectly timed after the Give OUT Day “Glitter” event at 6pm.
Cookie’s Monster shows are always a fun evening of drag. But with the annual Barbra Streisand/Liza Minnelli/Shirley Bassey tribute night, you are in for a diva-off like no other. In the hands of drag queens, this can be lethal!
With music mixed by DJ MC2 and a venue of the Edge, the queens will rock the house tonight.
Rock though? Do these divas have any songs you really dance too?
Sure they are Broadway style belters, but they have had a presence on the dance charts too.
Barbra had a giant disco hit with “The Main Event” and of course the Diva-Sing-Off with Donna Summer with “No More Tears (Enough is Enough),” which was the first 12’ single to go gold. Then as disco died, she had a few upbeat dance hits in the 1980s with “Emotion” and “Promises.” But Barbra came back strong just a few years back with her chart topping dance hit “Night of My Life.”
Then there’s Liza – who also is a strong voiced diva. Oddly, she never had a hit single. Sure we all know “Cabaret,” “Maybe This Time” and “New York, New York” but none of them even hit the charts. But with the help of the Pet Shop Boys and her “Results” album, in the late 1980s Liza was a definite force on the dance charts with “Losing My Mind” and “Don’t Drop Bombs.”
Of these divas, Shirley Bassey has made the most noise on the dance charts. Sure we know her as the “Goldfinger” singer. But she has already tried to remain musically relevant, including a visit to disco in the late 1970s with “This is My Life” and a 2007 CD compilation with contemporary danceable, remixed songs by modern artists including Pink and the album’s title track “Get the Party Started.”
So looks like tonight you should pick a diva, sit back and watch the Monster Show.
