Find craft beer wherever you are, Round 2: Pubquest

Chicago area as seen by pubquest.com

When I posted last week's article on "Finding craft beer wherever you are," I relied on my own memory of beer mapping sites i was already familiar with. Sure enough, it seems I missed one. And that one looks pretty good.

The Comments section of that article has a post by one "Julie," reading "Don't forget www.pubquest.com as well." Well, I had managed not to hear of it before, so here's my amended recommendation:

PubQuest.com.
Straightforward beer mapping, using Google Earth.

Places Tracked:
Breweries and brewpubs.

Does not seem to distinguish between breweries with or without a tasting room, so Goose Island's Fulton Street is shown, Anheuser-Busch is not.

Mobile Version: None.

Interactive Map: Yes

The home screen starts up with a Google Map and navigation drop-downs. I find just clicking and zooming in a few levels populates the map with custom icons, and very quickly, too. Currently limited to the U.S. and Canada. No tricks like searching by area code, but you can scroll the map to your heart's content and still see brewpub icons.

Note: Use of the maps is free. There is a membership offer to gets you a few tchotchkes and a pub discount program they're starting up. They're also offering printed maps of specific cities for sale

Locations are offered only with links to the place's web site, not to any beer review sites. This seems to be the product of three or four peope, one of whom may just be the "Julie" who posted the original content. Some new places may take a while to be added, but they do show more than a few places that are "planned." Looks like a very useful site for brewpub action. If you're looking for a beer bar or retailer, keep those sites from my previous article on hand, too.

Mark McDermott has been enjoying the fine union of grain, hops, yeast and water since sneaking Schmidt and Grain Belt at home. But it was only after being exposed to great craft beers at local brewpubs that he realized that beer can be more than a watery mood-altering substance. Now he seeks to...

Another site is BeerMenus.com. They've been developing it in NYC for about a year and just launched in Philly this week with hopes to roll out to other cities this year. (Full disclosure: it's the project of my two sons.)

Pubquest.com? Never heard of it. I will make sure to check it out. Thanks! Also, hi Mark, from what I call "little Chicago".
Thank you also for your comment on my brewery article back in June.
