Day by day, if you pay attention, bad news and the foretelling of even worse news is in your face. It is difficult not to be depressed with the constant bombardment of gloom and fear that is continuously before us. The government is lying to us, people are losing their jobs, an all-time record 47.1 million Americans are enrolled in the food stamp program and Americans living in poverty rose is greater than 49.7 million. Across the globe wars abound in the Middle East, the economies of Europe are a shambles and the scourge of abortion; drug abuse; divorce, and sexual sin abound….. Oh! Here comes another surge of anxiety. It never ends!
The world would have us forget that God is sovereign and in control of all that we are going through. It is no surprise to Him that we are anxious and fearful. However, he has given us a way to understand and respond without fear and undue stress. The Power of the Holy Spirit, prayer and God’s word (the Bible) are our only defense against what the world throws at us. Here is an example from my own experience today.
This morning I got out of bed as is my routing, made coffee and sat down with my bible and my journal. I started with prayer confessing that I was frustrated with the state of the world especially our country and asked God to forgive me for doubting that he had things in hand. I prayed that his word would refresh me and solidify my faith in what He is doing. As I opened the to the Book of Isaiah Chapter 11 and read, I began to feel the sense that the Holy Spirit was comforting me and then these words”
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
Their young ones shall lie down together;
And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,
And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.” (Is 11:6-9)
I was struck after finishing the chapter by the power of these words. When I realized that this prophetic passage speaks of the future after Christ is seated upon the throne of government in Jerusalem and that peace would reign and sin would be defeated, I was awestruck. In his first coming, I thought, Jesus fulfilled hundreds of prophecies, why would he fulfill this one in the future? In other words, the Lord provided me comfort by revealing to me that no matter what things looked like now and no matter how bad they might get in the months and years ahead, one day, “the leopard shall lie down with the young goat…and the child shal put his hand in the viper’s den.” One day peace will reign with Jesus Christ the Lord over the earth! I was blessed because the Lord wanted me to be blessed and comforted by his word. He answered my prayer with the same love that lead Him to the cross to die in my place.
As we grow closer to the Lord through our desire to know him, he will always extend His love and comfort. In these difficult days, draw near to Him and he will draw near to you.
