Fincher, Venable power Pack past Utah

Megan Fincher and Chelsea Venable smashed solo home runs on consecutive pitches Sunday afternoon as the Nevada Wolf Pack softball team beat Utah 6-4.

The back-to-back home runs by Fincher and Venable lifted the Wolf Pack to a 3-2 record in its five games at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. The Pack lost 11-1 to Utah Valley earlier on Sunday.

The home runs were the third of the season for Fincher and the first for Venable and they came in the sixth inning off Utah pitcher Naomi Amu to break a 4-4 tie.

Bailey Brewer went the distance for the victory, pitching seven innings and allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out six and walking two.

Brewer fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning but a two-run single by Erin Jones and a RBI single by Jasmine Jenkins gave Brewer and the Pack a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first.

Fincher walked and later scored on a passed ball to give the Pack a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning.

The Pack had 10 hits. Karly Hopkins and Jones each had two hits.

Hopkins, the Pack shortstop, was on base constantly in the five games. She hit .700 in St. George with 14 hits in 20 at-bats. Jones went 9-for-17 (.529) with five doubles and eight RBI. Jenkins was 7-for-17 (.412) with five RBI. Fincher drove in five runs on three homers and two doubles and a single in 16 at-bats (.375).

Nevada will return to the field at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas on Friday against Idaho State at 9 a.m.
