Financial literacy and the Net: Free workshops for teens

BeMoneySmartUSA , a Carmichael non-profit dedicated to promoting financial literacy for youth,  has scheduled the next session of free workshops starting October 23, 2010 through May 7, 2011, sponsored by the California Lottery and located at Phoenix University campuses in Roseville, Sacramento and Elk Grove.

Executive Director Marie Hall founded BeMoneySmartUSA  in response to the too big to fail crisis. Her aim is to counter the intense pressure our children experience in the network culture to be a consumer at the expense of building wealth.

“Our children are conditioned in all their cyber media communications to believe that in order to be somebody, you have to acquire things. And the lending and credit industry was built upon this belief that going into debt was a requirement so we could be better consumers,” Hall said.

Hall envisions a future where the next generation sets priorities for saving and spending that reflect their own values.

These one-day workshops offer practical, hands-on experience to be well-informed, purpose-driven consumers in a cyber-networked world that can be very deceiving and exploitive.

Students will participate in hands-on activities, games and contests that demonstrate the importance of wise financial planning now and for their future.

Students will learn how to be wiser consumers, gain insight to banking, budgeting, saving, investing and credit cards using successful strategies adopted by entrepreneurs.

The goal of these free workshops is to provide the next generation with the opportunity to participate in interactive education programs that teach financial literacy, business concepts, and entrepreneurship skills.
