The controversial, but praised new film Shame first hit the film festival circuit, playing at such high profile fests as Venice and Toronto. Next, the film saw a limited theatrical release starting December 2 in NYC and LA. Then, it began slowly spreading out to other cities across the country and was originally slated to come to New Orleans a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it was pushed back – not once, but twice. Well the long wait and false starts are finally over. Shame opens at The Theatres at Canal Place this Friday.
Shame, is an intense drama about a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life.
In New York City, Brandon's carefully cultivated private life – which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction – is disrupted and spirals out of control when his wayward sister Sissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay.
Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.
Watch the trailer for the film posted in the VIDEO box on the left side of the article.
Shame features a pair of rising Hollywood stars – Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, X-Men: First Class) and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Drive). The film is directed by Steve McQueen (the British director, not the deceased actor), whose last film Hunger, which also starred Fassbender, was huge critical success in 2008.
The film has won numerous international awards, including the FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival, several Best Actor accolades for Fassbender, and landed on many critics’ Top 10 Lists, plus I have anxiously awaiting the film for quite some time (so there’s that).
While racking up all those awards and nominations, the film has also sparked a great deal of controversy due to its graphic depiction of sex and sex addiction, in addition to more than its fair share of male and female nudity. All of which earned the filmed the notorious NC-17 rating.
Shame starts Friday, February 3 at The Theatres at Canal Place (333 Canal St.) – 12:30, 2:45, 5:15, 7:45, and 10:10.
