Home delivery of groceries has been around for years, and in many ways, it's a sustainable way to shop. It's like car-pooling for your food, which is good for the environment. When gas prices spike, it's especially good for your wallet. And since deliveries usually arrive in re-usable boxes, you don't wind up throwing away bags.
But for a person like me, who wants to prod her produce before putting it in her cart, grocery delivery has always been a tough sell. Until now.
Boston Organics, winner of the Weekly Dig's 2007 "digthis" award for best organic/local food distributor, has just created the Dogma Box. For $29, you get a box of locally sourced produce delivered to your door. BO promises 8 to 14 unique items from as close to Boston as possible.
This is the best of all worlds. Since all of BO's products are organic, I don't have to worry about chemicals in my food, and local sourcing means that less resources are expended in getting the it from field to table.
The promise of diversity is perhaps the most exciting part of the Dogma Box. For locavores, winter in New England means months on end of squash, potatoes, squash, and more potatoes, with the occasional carrot or bulb of garlic thrown in. But since BO is willing to go as far as Florida to fulfill their 8-item minimum, I can look forward to some different flavors and colors on my plate. Florida may not be local, but BO's commitment to working with orgamic farmers at the local level wherever they go alleviates much of my guilt about the distance.
The only problem? The earliest I could schedule my first Dogma delivery was January 9, 2009. For a grocery delivery service that meets my sustainability standards, I'll wait!
Shopping sustainably is harder than it seems

Enterprise Farms does the same thing, only for pickup in Davis or Arlington
Alas, if you live outside 128, you can forget about delivery, and unless you live in a town with CSA pickup, those aren't particularly doable either. So I'll just have to settle for driving to Idylwilde or Butterbrook Farms once in a blue moon.
I have a whole series of delivery 101 about delivery options in the area. Boston Organics is one of them, and there is also In Season, but I think they are done for the season. I hope they'll be back in the spring.
