After clinching the Big Ten title on Friday night, Minnesota took a complete 180 in its handling of the Saturday night affair at Yost Ice Arena with the Michigan Wolverines.

Alex Guptil’s twelfth goal of the season kicked off what was a stellar scoring game for the Wolverines on even strength at 5:16, and he had an assist from JT Compher in his goal. Two penalties (one for each team) ended the period on a note where each team was 0-1 on power plays. Shots had Minnesota up 11-5 through twenty minutes.

Twenty-two seconds into the middle period, Michigan’s Luke Moffatt scored his twelfth goal of the season on even strength from an assist by Michael Downing (his tenth) which gave the maize and blue a two goal cushion. Moffatt would score the eventual game winner at 4:50 of the second period (his second of the night and thirteenth of the year) on the power play after a Seth Ambroz elbowing penalty just under ninety seconds prior to it.

Goals from Zach Hyman at 13:21 (from Andrew Copp on even strength) and Phil Di Giuseppe at 15:20 (his twelfth with assists from Cristoval Nieves and Moffatt on even strength) put Michigan up 5-0. Brady Skjei would score twice (ending the second period at 17:49 with his fifth of the year and scoring his sixth at 2:48 of the third) but an Andrew Copp goal in the third at 0:30 would put Michigan up 6-2.

Shots on goal in the game finished 28-27 to Michigan and Michigan was 1-3 on power plays. Minnesota finished 0-3, but the Gophers will play next at 7pm on Friday in the second semifinal of the Big Ten Championship at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN.
