“Final Fantasy XIV Online” was originally put into alpha testing, and was launched worldwide, but was met with much hate and dismay from fans and critics alike. It is now slated for a relaunch on Aug. 27, 2013, as “A Realm Reborn,” according to Giant Bomb.
The game initially hit the web on Sept. 30, 2010 and was lauded as being “dull, tedious and outdated gameplay,” reports Giant Bomb.
Youichi Wada, the president of Square Enix, which publishes the title, publicly appologized for the game's poor quality. A new producer and director was put into place and the design team began completely recreating “Final Fantasy XIV.”
Nearly three years later, the game has been brought back with a total overhaul, and according to Metacritic, “has been rebuilt from the ground up.”
The entirely redesigned Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game is set to release on the PlayStation 3 and PC in just days. There are also plans to release the game for the PlayStation 4 sometime in 2014, but the exact date has not yet been announced.
