Final Fantasy XIII-2 gets new "Gameplay Variety" trailer

Earlier today, Square Enix released what they say is to be their last Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer, before the North American release of the game next Tuesday.

Dubbed the "Gameplay Variety" trailer, the footage - embedded in this article -- gives players a good idea of the many different sidequests and minigames available outside of the main quest. Considering one of the chief fan complaints about the original Final Fantasy XIII was the lack of side content to explore outside of the main story, it's probably a good thing that Square Enix is highlighting those things this time around.

At any rate, the trailer shows a new casino location called "Serendipity" that offers players the chance to play slot machines or bet on Chocobo races for gil and prizes, while "Captain Cryptic's Confounding Quiz" challenges players to answer game-related trivia for special rewards.

The trailer also showcases a bit of gameplay variety in the main quest as well, such as performing sidequests for NPCs, as well as tile- and clock-based puzzle sections. The NPC sidequests will reward players for tracking down specific items or defeating certain monsters for people in need. The tile-based puzzles have been seen before, and one is in fact present in the demo released recently on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, but impressions from players in Japan have given me the idea that the clock puzzles aren't particularly fun and in fact can be quite irritating.

Either way, North American Final Fantasy fans won't have to wait much longer to find out for themselves! Final Fantasy XIII-2 releases next Tuesday, January 31st, in both standard ($59.99) and limited ($79.99) editions. The limited edition comes bundled with the game's full, four-disc soundtrack and an exclusive art book, while the game itself gets special "premium packaging."
