Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin have been named the FINA World Swimmers of the Year, and are there any two swimmers more deserving?
During the 2012 season, Phelps capped off a phenomenal swimming career by earning four gold and two silver medals at the 2012 Olympic Games. Those six medals got added to the 16 Phelps already had from the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, and he became the most-decorated Olympian of all time. Keep in mind that a whopping 18 of those medals were gold.
It’s a feat that’s never likely to be matched, according to Yahoo! Sports analysts.
Franklin had an outstanding year of her own, earning four gold medals and one bronze medal, all at the age of 17. The teenager looks to be the future of USA Swimming, and she proved that she can handle the pressure when she succeeded in London.
It’s the second year in a row that Franklin has won the award, and the first time ever for Phelps. The award has been handed out since 2010.
What do you think? Are Phelps and Franklin the most deserving, or should someone else have been awarded the FINA World Swimmer of the Year title?
