If the name Filson looks familiar, that is because it’s been previously mentioned in this column, as a classic American heritage brand, and one that has been synonymous with the outdoors for well over 100 years. They have recently opened their sixth stand-alone store right here in New York City, and it is their first shop East of the Mississippi.
Neighboring the historic Engine 33 Firehouse (which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972), this NoHo location provides a nice fit and feel for the brand, despite its roots gearing more to the actual woods than to this “urban jungle.”
The retail staff is knowledgeable and engaging, which is good, because due to NYC rents, the size of the space is good, just not quite overwhelming. They are definitely rocking the “rugged outdoor” look, think plaids, faded jeans and worn boots. The store has high ceilings throughout and a back skylight which illuminates the “lounge” and distressed leather couch. The store resembles an open event space where your high school band used to practice. They even have an old school table top shuffleboard table for good measure.
Featuring a wide array (as wide as is available from Filson) of outdoor gear, clothing and the famous Filson duffles, this store provides a nice destination for brand devotees that have spent time in the past traipsing around NY city to “licensed Filson retailers” who never seem to carry all of their items (you know who you are), and frequently are missing the one that initiated the search to begin with.
And while the web has, over time, become an easier and less inane way to shop, there still is something comforting about the feeling one gets when they can actually get their hands on certain goods before they purchase them. Filson is decidedly a “tactile” brand and this new retail outlet is the perfect way to get your mitts on some authentic Filson gear, right here in the big bad city.
