Film review - Take Shelter

October 1, 2011 – Take Shelter is the story of Curtis LaForche (played by Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon), a young husband and father plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions that terrify his dreams and prompt him into inexplicable behaviors.

He chooses to keep his anxiety to himself, channeling it into the obsessive building of a storm shelter in his backyard.  His strange fears confuse his wife Samantha, played by Jessica Chastain (The Help and The Tree of Life), whose bond to her husband is tested.

The film was written and directed by Jeff Nichols in the summer of 2008, when he was a newlywed and at a time when the situation of our country looked anything but bright.  Nichols understood that anxiety is born out of having something to lose, and he was finding himself anxious because, in his own words:  “I finally had things in my life that I didn’t want to lose.  All of these feelings filtered directly into the characters of this film.”
