Set during the French Revolution, film noir fan favorite The Black Book blends history and fiction into a shadowy, suspenseful tale–available for the first time in full HD restoration from the original 35mm film elements–on DVD from Film Chest Media Group.
We won’t give too much away . . . Maximilien Robespierre (Richard Basehart), already the most powerful man in France, wants to become the nation’s dictator and engineers a plan to get rid of anyone who may stand in his way. But when he discovers his secret black book containing a list of rivals marked for the guillotine has been stolen, he must find it before his aspirations for power are exposed.
To recover the missing book, Maximilien sends for a judge known for his harsh sentencing of enemies of the revolution. Before this “hanging judge” arrives, he is assassinated and replaced by Charles D’Aubigny (Robert Cummings), an imposter intent on revealing the would-be tyrant’s treacherous plans.
Aided by his mistress, Madelon (Arlene Dahl), Charles must avoid detection and locate the evidence before it’s too late.
Directed by Anthony Mann, The Black Book–also known as Reign of Terror–is presented in full screen with an aspect ratio of 4 x 3 and original sound.
