David Lynch. Electro-pop album. Have we entered into a parallel universe?
With a title like Crazy Clown Time, it seems like in only a matter of milliseconds we're transported to a dingy San Fernando Valley diner with a greasy dumpster monster lurching around the corner. But as far as we can tell from Lynch's newly released tracklist (posted below) and singles previewed last January, there are no side realities, movie theatre-squatting dwarves or (perhaps a letdown) Agent Dale Cooper on Lynch's debut full-length, due out Nov. 8.
But there is Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, who contributes vocals to the track "Pinky's Dream."
Although engineer, guitarist and drummer Dean Hurley provided Lynch with some back-up assistance, Crazy Clown Time marks the first time that the L.A.-based film writer-director will release an album he wrote, produced and performed in its entirety. A director long known for working closely with his composers and collaborting with musicians, it's not too unusual for Lynch to be making the full-blown switch into music. The bubbly, atmospheric electro-pop, however, still remains a mystery.
Singles "I Know" and "Good Day Today," which will be included on Crazy Clown Time, were released last January along with full remixes of the tracks. While the piercing, blues-tinged "I Know" is more in line with Lynch's brooding persona, "Good Day Today" was a delectable surprise of shimmering synths and effervescent overtones. Maybe it's all that transcendental meditation Lynch has reportedly been doing, or maybe we have entered into a parallel universe after all.
