Filion and Benfeito win World Series Diving event in Windsor

According to the Canadian Press on Friday, Canadian Olympic bronze medalists Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal, Quebec and Roseline Filion of Laval, Quebec won a World Series diving competition in Windsor, Ontario. Benfeito and Filion won the gold medal in the women's 10m platform synchronized diving competition.

Benfeito and Filion posted a score of 330.75 points for their first synchronized diving victory at the World Series level. Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch of Great Britain won the silver medal with a score of 311.10 points followed by Emily Boyd and Lara Tarvit of Australia at 308.58 points.

China's Xiaohui Huang and Jie Lian, considered strong medal contenders, needed to withdraw after the first dive because of an injury. According to the Malaysia Star, one of the Chinese divers sustained an arm ailment.

Benfeito and Filion, who won the bronze medal for Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the women's 10m synchronized diving competition, won the fifth stop of the FINA Diving World Series, the first time the series has ever come to Canada. There were previous stops in Beijing, China; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; London, Great Britain; and Moscow, Russia in 2014. The series will conclude in Monterrey, Mexico next weekend.

Also on Friday, Pamela Ware of Greenfield Park, Quebec and Jennifer Abel of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal in the women's 3m springboard synchronized diving competition. Abel won a bronze medal with the retired Emilie Heymans of Montreal, Quebec in the women's 3m springboard synchronized diving competition at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Ware and Abel posted a score of 326.25 points. They were behind Chinese gold medalists Han Wang and Zi He. who posted a score of 326.40 points and ahead of the Italian duo of Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape at 308.1 points.

Prior to Friday, Ware won a bronze medal in the women's 3m springboard competition at the World Series events in Beijing, China and London, England. Ware also teamed with Abel to win silver in the women's 3m springboard synchronized diving competitions in Beijing.

Meanwhile for Benfeito and Filion, it was their fourth medal together in the women's 10m platform synchronized diving competition in the FINA World Series. They previously won a silver in Beijing and a bronze in London and Dubai. Benfeito also won a silver medal in the women's 10m individual platform in London and Filion won a bronze medal in the women's 10m individual platform in Dubai.

The FINA Diving World Series will continue in Windsor Saturday and Sunday. Television coverage for the weekend's event is on tape delay and will be broadcasted next weekend. The World Series diving events are a major stepping stone for divers as they prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
