Tax season has officially begun and even though the IRS will not start processing individual tax returns until January 30, 2013 filers can still file their taxes online now with free tax filing software programs.
The best option is for taxpayers to file electronically through one of the many available free programs online or software programs that can be purchased.
The vast majority can start filing online right now in order for the IRS to start processing your return on January 30. This is regardless if you file electronically or on paper. The IRS will be able to accept tax returns affected by the late Alternative Minimum Tax patch and the three major “extender” provisions for people claiming the state and local sales tax deduction, higher education tuition and fees deduction and educator expenses deduction.
Those who cannot file until later are those who file using forms that were affected by late legislation. These returns are expected to be accepted by the IRS in late February or early March.
The main forms that require some extensive programming changes include Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits), Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization) and Form 3800 (General Business Credit). A full listing of the forms that won’t be accepted until later is available on IRS.gov.
In the meantime the IRS is working with tax software and tax professionals to minimize any delays and ensure a smooth tax season.
Anyone can file their taxes for free right now with any of the free tax software available online and have it processed right away on January 30th. So go ahead and click a link below for free online tax filing or go to IRS.gov to find out how to file your taxes online for free.
