A fighter jet lands on a stool and positively amazes viewers after the epic video goes viral online. Defying all odds, an American fighter jet somehow managed to make a successful vertical landing on top of a large aircraft carrier in what can only be described as a perfect perch. Some quick-thinking recorder managed to catch the incredible clip and recently uploaded it to YouTube, where News Max reports this Friday, June 27, that it has already garnered hundreds of thousands of views.
Viewers may have to watch the video more than once to verify that it’ real, but a fighter jet landing on a padded stool in what looked like an impossible landing is just “another day’s work,” said the experienced pilot in a statement. Captain William Mahoney is the man who was in the cockpit of this American aircraft. Yet he encountered a problem when preparing to land — his gear had malfunctioned, and the failing was preventing him from making a safe descent.
So what exactly does the accomplished pilot do? Show off some incredible aerial skills by making a veritable vertical landing, perching atop a stool on a seafaring carrier. Although the video was only uploaded to the YouTube website earlier this week, it appears that the perfect descent — that honestly looks like it could have been a stunt from “Top Gun” or some similar action movie — actually took place on June 7.
Today.com News reveals that the American fighter jet in question was an AV-8B Harrier, which was a popular jump jet used back in the time of the Cold War with Russia. Captain Mahoney said that he had never actually made a landing quite like this one before, but being faced with a dangerous situation after his landing gear malfunctioned, he had little choice but to use his flying skills to make the precarious perch. Still, no biggie — at least in the eyes of this expert aviator, who dismissed its epic-ness in a comment after the video.
"It was a normal flight day,” he ultimately said.
The press release notes that the flight crew aboard the USS Bataan of our great nation’s Navy quickly let Mahoney after takeoff that something was wrong. The experts saw that some of his landing equipment on the American jet had not deployed properly from the plane’s nose, so a routine landing back to the US carrier would not be safe. A padded stool was immediately called for — which is kept on such ships at all times for emergency situations like these — and Mahoney made perfect use of it.
Shortly afterwards, the fighter let landing on the stool in an almost vertical plunge was witnessed live on video. It was all done seemingly effortlessly, with the 22,000 pound aircraft alighting on the padded object with just a brief spring.
"I did an approach at 300 feet so he could see my landing gear and give me an idea of what was going on," the expert pilot explained. "The difference with this landing was I was going to step it down: 50, 40, 30, 20 feet — to make sure I was aligned and stabilized before Major Murphy would clear me to land ... so that I had the best chance to actually put the nose on the stool."
"I'm at 20 feet stabilizing and I can't see the stool. I don't even know it's there. I didn't see it coming over the end of the ship, I remember looking for it, but I never saw the stool," he said with a laugh. "At that point, I was just sort of along for the ride."
After an incredible feat like this (the new video itself of the fighter jet's special landing is featured above), it's not hard to comprehend why viewers everywhere are simply amazed at their computer screens.
