Fight week has to be the most exciting week in all of sports. Especially when a big fight is seven days away. None bigger than Mayweather vs ‘Canelo’ will take place Saturday September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to fight promoters and network executives this fight could be the biggest fight in the history of boxing. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has set the record for his guaranteed $41.5 million he will receive to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. This will be a nice payout to complement the reported $132 million that is already in Mayweather’s single bank account.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza claim that their projections indicate that Mayweather vs. Canelo will break the record set by Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. That record was set back in 2007 with 2.5 million pay-per-views.
During fight week celebrities, fight fans, reporters and the fighters will make their way to sin city. Showtime will document the week with their All Access show. Fighters will make a grand entrance to the casino early in the week. Mayweather will have his followers who he has branded as the ‘Money Team’. Canelo will have his support of die-hard Mexican boxing fans and fans that tune in to see if Mayweather will suffer defeat.
The MGM Grand will open the arena for the pre-fight weigh-ins and will be aired live on CBS Television. ESPN will dedicate additional coverage during the week starting with the ‘Fight Issue’ of ESPN the Magazine. A dynamic undercard is in place that will please boxing fans. The series of events and hype this week will build on the question who will be the one? Saturday night the sports world will find out.
