Feb 7 UFC 169(Newark, N.J.) pay-per-view
In what has become a pre-Super Bowl tradition, the UFC is holding a pay per view event the night before the big game. Main card fights include MMA Lab/Arizona Combat Sports fighter Jamie Varner vs. Abel Trujillo.
Varner made his return to the UFC in 2012 beating now 11th ranked lightweight Edson Barboza. Despite that victory, his two losses to Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau have kept the former WEC lightweight champion out of the UFC’s top 15. If Varner is to put himself in title contention, the long road begins with a victory over the 11-5 Trujillo.
The nights co-main and main events feature title fights in the 135 and 145 pound divisions. 145 pound champion Jose Aldo defends his title against Ricardo Lamas, who comes in as a steep under dog despite riding a four fight win streak. That is largely due to the fact that the champion has not lost a fight since 2005, compiling an impressive list of vanquished foes including Kenny Florian, Urijah Faber, Cub Swanson and Chan Sung Jung along the way.
Headlining the event will be the rematch between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao. The Two first met in July 2012 for what was then the UFC 135 pound interim title with Faber dropping the unanimous decision to Barao. Barao won his next two fights while Faber went 4-0 in 2013. Faber largely credits his rejuvenation to the arrival of Duane Ludwig to Team Alpha Male.
Other feature fights include former John Lineker vs. Ali Bagautinov and former UFC heavy weight champion Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem. Both men were in the thick of the title hunt just a year ago but have since lost three and two straight fights respectively. Main card starts at 8 pm locally. Feb. 7 Lion Fights 13 (Las Vegas, Nev) Televised event
Lion Fight Promotions has been instrumental in bringing Muay Thai to to the American audience and this event features some of the most prominent Muay Thai fighters on the continent.
Tiffany Van Soest defends her newly won women’s featherweight title against Carley Reece in the main event. In her previous televised fights, Reece has steamrolled through opponents but has yet to face a fighter the caliber of Reece.
Also on the card will be Kevin Ross in a rematch against Matt Embree. Ross is touted as one of the best Thai Boxers in the country but is coming off of a two fight losing streak.
Representing Arizona will be Nick Chasteen of Best Muay Thai fighting Abel Trujillo. Before making his pro debut Chasteen was already being hailed as the new face of American Muay Thai. After beating Chris Culley in his first pro bout, Chasteen looks to continue his meteoric rise against relative unknown Trujillo.
