"Fifty Shades of Grey" has had a great year. Fans experienced the best and the worst, from bizarre casting rumors to actual set photos, the roller coaster that was 2013 is finally coming to an end. 2014 will bring the "greysessed" even more excitement, with filming in Vancouver resuming on Jan 6 and a rumored teaser trailer during the Super Bowl. Until then, enjoy the top 5 moments that "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans experienced this year
#1 - We have a director
Surprise, it's a girl! Female author E L James likely had a hand when choosing Director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is also a UK native. Girl power runs deep in Team Fifty, with Screenwriter Kelly Marcel being the first to join the ranks. Sam Taylor-Johnson was obviously chosen for more than her gender, Producer Michael De Luca explained why she was the right person for the job, "Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life."
All the Christian Grey casting rumors, from Ian Somerhalder to Henry Cavill, were finally put to rest on Sept 2 when E L James tweeted the addition of Charlie Hunnam to Team Fifty. Fans were slow to warm-up to the gruff "Sons of Anarchy" star and it seemed for good reason as less than a month after his casting, James announced he was exiting the project. Media outlets scrambled for answers and while the "scheduling conflict" excuse has stuck, fans may never know the true reason. Luckily Team Fifty moved quickly to replace Hunnam and found an actor that has been deemed more physically right for the role of Christian Grey. Jamie Dornan was cast on Oct 23 and fan reactions have remained positive.
Christian Grey was only the beginning of the casting fun to be had in 2013. Here is a list of the subsequent announcements, with the only major casting decision left being who will play Mrs. Robinson.
Jamie Dornan - Christian Grey
Dakota Johnson - Anastasia Steele
Jennifer Ehle - Carla May Wilks
Eloise Mumford - Kate Kavanagh
Max Martini - Jason Taylor
Marcia Gay Harden - Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey
Rita Ora - Mia Grey
Luke Grimes - Elliot Grey
Callum Keith Rennie - Ray Steele
Victor Rasuk - José Rodriguez
Dylan Neal - Bob Adams
Due to the casting fumble mentioned earlier fans had to accept some not-so-great news from Team Fifty in 2013. The announced release date of Aug 1, 2014 (now only a short 8 months away) had been pushed to Valentine's week 2015 (A much longer 14 months away). The delay will eventually be in the benefit of "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans who will get the right cast and plenty of film promotion time. An even better reason for the delay, Producer Dana Brunetti mentioned he would be interested in a dual release of both an R rated film and a steamier NC-17 version.
#5 - Filming begins
The moment every fan had been waiting for happened on Dec 2, 2013. Filming for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film began in Vancouver. If it could get better than that, fans were soon delighted with photos of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson on set filming crucial scenes. While the cast and crew is currently on hiatus for the holidays, filming is set to resume in early January.
