"Fifty Shades of Grey" may be a mega-popular book and the upcoming film adaptation has fans salivating at the thought of seeing the erotic tale on the big-screen. But big name star Ryan Gosling actually turned down the part of Christian Grey, as did various other A-listers.
The casting of the lead roles — which were ultimately landed by relatively unknown actors Dakota Johnson as Anastasia, and Charlie Hunnam as Grey — have fans in an uproar, but producers may not have had much choice in who was picked.
Several well-known stars were approached for the parts, including Gosling who simply said he was just not "interested" to be in the film, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. Next was Garrett Hedlund, who was relentlessly pursued for the role but declined because he could not connect with the character.
Apparently, even Hunnam himself was reluctant at first before accepting the offer to play the mysterious billionaire with a flair for S&M.
As for the role of Anastasia Steele a couple of well-known actresses turned it down as well, including Shailene Woodley, who supposedly had a conflict with her upcoming film "Divergent," and Elizabeth Olsen, who passed on the role for no given reason. Felicity Jones was also up for the part, although she was deemed too old to play a 23-year old character.
Meanwhile, two casting choices that were fan-favorites were never even asked. Internet favorites Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel, were not considered by producers, but they inspired an online petition at Change.org that generated 5,000 signatures as of two days ago.
So, it took a while to finally have the leads chosen, and producers have stood by their picks. They feel Johnson, who happens to be the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and Hunnam are the perfect match.
"There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks," producer Dana Brunetti tweeted in response to the fans' casting choice reaction, "Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc... So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
