Fifty Shades of Grey minus the hype

While many readers have bought into the hype of how great this trilogy really is, I’m here to set it straight. Yes, “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a New York Times best-seller, but, should this story really be a best seller?

The story is set around a college student, Anastasia Steele who meets Christian Grey, CEO of Grey Enterprises. While the story surrounds their love affair, the story raises several questions about relationships. In the book, an inexperienced Anastasia Steele finds herself in the middle of a twisted love affair with a man who dabbles, well enjoys a dominatrix lifestyle with a long list of subs.

In the book Christian and Anastasia address the obvious issues of what’s considered Anastasia’s hard and soft limits. In any relationship there are both hard and soft limits whether in or outside of the bedroom. As far as relationships are concerned, what’s considered hard limits? Abandonment, cheating, jealousy, physical fighting, possessiveness, and all forms of abuse come to mind as some hard limits. While the book tries to address some of these hard limits, it sort of fell short. Even though the potential sub turned fiancée to Christian, had several internal fights to make sense of her new lifestyle, like being a sub in a dominatrix relationship, dealing with his anger towards her at times, his possessives of her, she ultimately gave into the needs of Christian Grey.

Do most women ultimately buy into the needs and desires of their mate even if it’s against what they stand for? Possibly. While Anastasia felt completely uncomfortable about their arrangement, she later wanted to do whatever possible to be with him. Some of the story became borderline desperate. To be with this guy she idolized as a god, the young college student began to consider the arrangement and even make amendments to the Dom and Sub contract. She considered his contract while doubting why he wants to be with her.

Yes, there was a contract inserted into an already strange and weird story line. In what world does the socially awkward, sort of unattractive college student rub elbows with a young, handsome CEO? This is rare. Let’s move on, Christian presents Anastasia with a Dom and Sub contract to protect himself from being exposed by his sub. In what world is it possible to sign an agreement where you consent to be beaten, spanked, etc… and have this stand up in a court of law. Really!

After reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Fifty Shades of Darker,” it’s fair to assume the book begins to get a little more redundant in how the story and their love affair turn out. So far, the movie is still in the early stages of development. This could be a better movie than book considering it will more likely leave out some of the small details that don’t really help move the story along.
