A “Fifty Shades of Grey” backlash over the casting of Charlie Hunnam’s Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele this week is something that EL James and the producers were likely not expecting. But according to TIME this Wednesday, Sept. 4, it seems that a majority of “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie fans are very unhappy (and vocal) about the casting leads for the upcoming film, and several petitions have sprung up online to vote for a new Christian and Ana.
Some of these “Fifty Shades of Grey” fans feel that regardless of whether the duo are talented actors or not, Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson lack either the correct look, sex appeal, on-screen charisma, or attitude — or any combination of these factors — to star as the movie’s leads. (Here's some history on both stars). Hence the harsh backlash from many in the "50 Shades" fanbase.
One such petition site is OneChange.org — which has well over 10,000 signatures already and counting — in support of Matt Bomer of “White Collar,” calling him the “perfect Christian Grey description”, as well as that of Alexis Bledel of “Gilmore Girls,” as the “perfect Anastasia Steele actress.” Of course, there were many other stars that were featured commonly in contender polls, including Henry Cavill, Alexander Skarsgard, Ian Somerhalder, Alex Pettyfer, Emilia Clarke, and more.
Dana Brunetti, a producer for the upcoming “Fifty Shades of Grey” film, recently took to Twitter to tell fans that as much as they want to cast everyone’s favorites, it’s just not feasible in the casting process of the hotly coveted Christian Grey especially, as well as that of Ana Steele.
“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”
Sadly for many fans, however, online petitions for such films don’t always work, despite all of the effort and passion of fans involved. It’s likely that Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy” will be our Christian Grey, and Dakota Johnson of “The Social Network” will still be our lead couple on the silver screen.
Of course, there is a very definite fanbase who are happy with these results, and that is always a good thing. Yet a majority of the (vocal, at least) “Fifty Shades of Grey” readers seem disappointed with casting.
Except for Johnson’s own mom, actress Melanie Griffith, that is.
“My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama”
This writer is more than fine with Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson, as he feels that if they are the leads EL James was willing to choose/settle on, then it was certainly the right choice. Where do you stand on the spectrum and what's your take on the "Fifty Shades of Grey" backlash surrounding casting?
For those of you fellow fans who are in that group unhappy with the casting of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele as Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson, will you still go see the movie? It seems that this looming issue is the big “what-if” surrounding the outcome (and eventual financial success) of the film.
