After months of speculation, the casting rumors for the upcoming film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" have finally been laid to rest. On Monday, September 2 People.com reported that both of the lead roles have been cast and the news was confirmed by the director on the social networking site Twitter.
The author of the erotic novel series, E.L. James, revealed that Anastasia Steele will be played by Dakota Johnson and Christian Grey will be played by actor Charlie Hunnam. Johnson's name has appeared in the rumor mill for the role, but she wasn't the frontrunner in a group that included Emma Watson and Mila Kunis. Hunnam beat out other actors such as Ian Somerholder, Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer.
Johnson, 23, is a model and actress who most recently appeared in the film drama "'The Social Network" and the television series "Ben and Kate." She is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Hunnam, 33, is most known for his role as Jackson "Jax" Teller on the television drama "Sons of Anarchy" on FX. He recently appeared as Raleigh Becket in the science fiction film "Pacific Rim" from director Guillermo del Toro.
The film follows college student Anastasia Steele as she falls for the wealthy and deceptive older man Christian Grey. The film will cover the first book in the "Fifty Shades" trilogy from James which was released in 2011. The movie will be directed by Sam Taylor-Wood and will be released in theaters on August 1, 2014.
