Fifth European title for Kostner, Sotnikova debuts with silver

The ladies' podium at the 2013 European Figure Skating Championships today was a tale of a veteran and two rookies, and it was the veteran, Carolina Kostner, who took home the gold. She has had an up-and-down career, but Europeans has been the competition where she has consistently placed high. Her fifth title today put her on the podium for the eighth consecutive year.

Kosnter started her free skate with a strong triple lutz, a jump that has only come back into her competitive repertoire this season after being absent for a couple of years. Mistakes crept in later in her free skate, as she doubled her final two salchows. But she did enough early on to move up from second to win with a 194.71.

Former Russian champion Adelina Sotnikova, making her Europeans debut, took the silver after winning the short program over Kostner. She hit six clean triples, including a triple lutz-triple toe and a double axel-triple toe but a singled triple flip cost her the gold. She finished with a 193.99, less than a point behind Kostner.

Also making her Europeans debut was Sotnikova's teammate, current Russian champion Elizaveta Tuktamisheva delivered the free skate of the competition, hitting seven triples in her program to move up to take the bronze with a 188.85. Former Italian champion Valentina Marchei made it all Italy and Russia in the top four with her best career finish at Europeans, fourth place.
