Edmonton is one of the four official host cities for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014, which runs Aug. 5-24.

The Alberta capital hosted the inaugural FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2002. The final set the still-standing record of 47,400 spectators.

The tournament served as a launching pad for Canadian stars like Christine Sinclair (the adidas Golden Ball winner), Candace Chapman, Erin McLeod and Carmelina Moscato, not to mention others like Camille Abily, Rachel Buehler and Marta.

In the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 group phase, Edmonton will host Group B for two match days on Aug. 5 and Aug. 8, then a mix of Group C and Group D games on Aug. 13. Edmonton also hosts one quarterfinal match on Aug. 16.

Edmonton has previously served host for international matches in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the FIFA U-20 World Cup, and the aforementioned FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

In 2003, Edmonton set the Canadian attendance record for a Women’s International Friendly match when 29,953 attended a Canada-Mexico send-off match before the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003.

The 32-match FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 features 16 teams.
