The sport of paintball requires three things to be able to play. First, you must have other players to play against. Second, you must have the right gear to be able to participate. Last but definitely not least, you must have a place to play. Paintball at its very essence is a sport where paint filled balls are shot at a quick speed and a quick rate over a large distance. This makes playing paintball in one's backyard or in the middle of the city almost impossible due to the chance of collateral damage to both property and non-involved people. Enter the Paintball fields. Paintball fields worldwide offer players a safe and affordable place for Paintballers to enjoy their sport without the worry of damage. They do much more than that though, as the fields are one of the main ingredients needed for Paintball to survive as a sport. If fields raise their prices too high, the player base drops off leaving the sport dead.

For the first of many upcoming field spotlights, we look to Gabe Giberson field operator for Royal Ridges to find out more about this "grass roots" field.

Q: How long have you been a field manager for Royal Ridges?

I have been Royal Ridges Retreat’s Paintball field manager since February 2007.

Q: What does Royal ridges paintball have to offer to both the new and the seasoned player?

Here at Royal Ridges Paintball we are a paintball ministry reaching out to the community and showing them how paintball can be played in a safe and pro-family environment.

First time paintballers can have tons of questions and some are scared. Our referees and staff are always there to offer a helping hand and tips to make their experience safe and fun.

For the more experienced players of all ages, the field is always changing and so are the players. No two days of play are the same at Royal Ridges Paintball. If it’s a open play or one of our scenario games, it’s always a fun day full of stories and laughs.

Q: What exciting new events will be coming to Royal ridges in the near future?

New in 2013 we will be hosting several armature/beginner only open plays. These days are an opportunity for first timers and beginners to get out and play with matched experience levels. Staff will be more focused on teaching and helping them learn.

We also will be starting to schedule Sunday open plays for all levels of player and woodsball clinics hosted by our field sponsored teams this summer.

Q: Royal Ridges is sometimes called a “grass roots field”. What exactly does that mean?

Grass roots or feeder field is a paintball field where many players can get there start in the sport. This is the place where players get a chance to play the sport in the most common recreational environment. These kinds of fields are most important due to they keep adding more and more players to the sport. Otherwise I would have nobody to play with.

Q: Among the local fields, Ridges has some of the lowest prices. Why set them so low and what would a brand new paintball player have to pay to give Paintball a try?

I was a paintball player before I was a field manager. I try to run the field the way I would want a field to operate “for the players ran by players”, prices included.

For a player who has no gear but has the will to play, basic rental package is $35 and this covers

Field Fee

All day Air refills

Rental Marker (paintball gun)

Rental HPA tank (air tank)

Rental Goggles

500 paintballs

Q: What other types of activities can be found at the Royal Ridges Retreat?

We horseback rides, swimming, canoes, climbing wall, slip-n-slide, field games, fun, big swing, hiking trails, archery, mountain boards, fun, crafts, game tent, snack shop, hay ride, stretch ride or buck'n string ride, petting zoo, human foosball, high ropes course, low ropes course. We have camps in the summer for almost every age. Resident horsemanship camp, resident adventure camp, day horsemanship camp, day camp, adventure day camp, day paintball camp.
