January 20, 2012 – Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most popular musicals ever. It is the story of a poor dairyman in a little village called Anatevka, who is trying to support his family while instilling in his five daughters the traditions of his Jewish faith amidst social changes and political strife in Russia.
Tevye, the protagonist, speaks to God often in humorous conversations during which he asks whether much in the world would change “if he were a rich man.” A matchmaker tries to find matches for his daughters who, one by one, struggle to break with traditions and follow their hearts. After living with a woman to whom he had been matched many years before, Tevye considers whether he has ever been loved.
Full with historical and ethnic details, the production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Candlelight Pavilion makes for a delightful experience. It does not have Chaim Topol, but it has Randy Hilton as Tevye, and Hilton leaves nothing to be desired.
In 1965, Fiddler on the Roof was recognized with a Tony Award for Best Musical and for another eight categories. In 1991 the musical won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. Its story was turned into a film in 1971 and received multiple Academy Awards and two Golden Globes. If you have not seen this fabulous musical, grab on to this opportunity!
