The "government shutdown" ended Wednesday without accomplishing anything thanks to backstabbing antagonism by establishment Republicans in the Senate. President Obama then made a speech, Thursday, brimming with lies and vitriol.
Republicans were holding 4 aces, yet (thanks to RINO's such as John McCain and Mitch McConnell) were beaten by Democrats with a pair of 2's.
The Democrats' position was indefensible. Here is a short list.
- Obamacare is already hurting people by significantly raising insurance premiums, causing them to lose insurance coverage, causing significantly reduced working hours or losing their jobs altogether, etc.
- The Obama Administration blocked war veterans from the National Mall, yet opened it to illegal aliens to hold a protest.
- House Republicans sent many bills to the Senate which would have funded those government entities which were shut down, including funding children's cancer research and veterans' affairs, yet the president and Harry Reid refused to even recognize them.
Many other examples could be cited, but we're beating a dead horse. Our only hope is that House Republicans will again have the intestinal fortitude to stand up for their constituents in the coming weeks and months as the budget and debt ceiling again becomes an issue.
Obama wasted no time using the shutdown as an excuse for the damage caused by his policies.
"These last few weeks have inflicted completely unnecessary damage on our economy. We don’t know yet the full scope of the damage, but every analyst out there believes it slowed our growth," Obama stated.
Putting aside the obvious exaggeration of "every analyst out there," the sentence disregards the actual state of our economy prior to the "shutdown".
The economy has been damaged since the recession started in December 2007, 11 months after Democrats took control of both houses of Congress.
According to the World Bank, U.S. economic growth from 2003 to 2006 was consistently 3% annually. In 2007, it was 2%. In 2008, it was 0% and negative 3% in 2008. It has stagnated at 2% from 2009 to 2012.
With the dramatic increase in reckless government spending since Obama took office, the federal government's annual tax revenue is not enough to cover the interest on our national debt.
The U.S. Debt Clock shows the federal government receives $2.7 trillion in tax revenue. The interest on our debt is $2.8 trillion.
Obama stated, "Over the past four years, our economy has been growing, our businesses have been creating jobs, and our deficits have been cut in half."
This is nothing short of a bold-faced lie.
As shown above, the economy is stagnate. Employment figures show there are 2 million fewer people currently employed than in 2007, during which time the population grew by 14 million.
The biggest whopper is that "our deficits have been cut in half." Our deficit is currently $784 billion and counting. It was $1.1 trillion in 2012 according to the Tax Policy Center.
Taking into consideration the recently raised debt ceiling, the fact that the national debt exceeds the GDP, the interest on our debt exceeds the tax revenue and the fact that Obamacare will be the equivalent of a sucking chest wound on our economy, the deficit is sure to increase fast and soon.
Obama advised, "...the deficit is getting smaller, not bigger. It’s going down faster than it has in the last 50 years."
Historical data shows that the deficit is higher than it has ever been. The deficit was at it's highest level ever before (previous years adjusted to reflect today's dollar value) in Obama's first year in office at $459 billion. It increased by $1 trillion dollars (from $459 billion to $1.4 trillion) in Obama's second year in office.
We are still on track to have a deficit more than double the highest amount under previous administrations.
He spent the bulk of the rest of his speech decrying those Republicans who stood up for the American people who do not want to be saddled with an overbearing bureaucracy that is already and will continue to cause them great economic harm.
He called these people extremists and criticized the Representatives for not doing the job they were sent to D.C. to do. In fact, they are doing exactly the job they were sent to D.C. to do, represent the people and the Constitution. It is the Democrats and establishment RINO's who are not doing the job they were sent to do.
He also advised, "There are no winners here." The winners are the Washington elite and their big business cronies. The losers are the rest of us who have to suffer the consequences of their policies.
