On Sunday, FIBA Americas Championship 2013 live stream games continue as teams battle for a spot at the FIBA Basketball World Cup being held in Spain next year. Among them, will be a game featuring Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, with NBA star JJ Barrea once again on display in the international game. Today's FIBA basketball game will be live streaming online for sports fans to enjoy through the ESPN networks.
According to a Sept. 8 report from SBNation.com, today's games at the FIBA Americas Championship have major implications in terms of which teams receive 2014 World Cup berths. Among them, Puerto Rico is already secured with a spot in next year's FIBA World Cup, but if they can defeat Mexico today, they'll get the No.1 seed. On the other hand, Mexico needs a victory to get a berth to the World Cup. A loss by Mexico might send them out of the tourney, depending on results from two of the other games.
In their previous games, Puerto Rico survived a thriller against Venezuela, winning it 86-85 in overtime. J.J. Barea had seven points in just 37 seconds for his team, with Venezuela forcing OT. In the extra session, Barea was again the hero, as he came up with a huge steal in the final seconds to help clinch the win, and Puerto Rico's berth for the 2014 Cup. Meanwhile, Mexico had a big win, 100-89 over Jamaica to send them out of contention. In the game, Hector Hernandez led the way with 25 points, while Orlando Mendez added 22 points and seven assists.
Barea has been the star during the FIBA Americas for Puerto Rico and should continue to do so in 2014. The Minnesota Timberwolves NBA point guard is averaging 14.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game for his club. Another notable NBA player joins him, as Carlos Arroyo is part of the Puerto Rican team. He no longer plays with the NBA and is now part of the Galatasaray team in Turkey, but has been averaging 14.1 ppt, 2.6 rpg and 4.4 assists a game. Renaldo Balkman has also been providing major help. The power forward formerly played with the Knicks and Nuggets in the NBA from 2006 through 2012, and now plays with Brujos de Guayama of Puerto Rico.
For Mexico, there's slightly less in terms of NBA talent, although they have center Gustavo Ayon who currently plays with the New Orleans Pelicans and is averaging 18 points a game and 8 rebounds. There's also point guard Jorge Gutierrez who is currently with the Canton Charge of the NBDL. He's been averaging 10.1 points a game, 4 rebounds and about 2 assists for his stats and will be among those trying to help Mexico capture a berth with a win today.
