“This tasting could have been just another ho-hum examination of Barbera. Believe me there’s a flood of it. That isn’t good enough. Not ever, not at VINO, and certainly not if I expect you to pay for it! Instead, I took the time to dig deeper, discarding wannabe producers who talked a big game but weren’t worthy of being set in front of you.”

“Our lineup is a knock out, top to bottom. I would willingly, even giddily, drink any of these bottles at any time. The lineup is that strong. With the quality of great Barbera being offered, you don’t need to venture much past the $30 a bottle mark to drink something profound, as you’ll see Friday. Heck, even at $16.95 you’ll be slurping one of my current favorite wines from anywhere. Enough build up. Here’s the definition of “worthy”….
-2009 ARALDICA Barbera d’Asti “Albera” $11.95…90 pts-Wine Spectator
-2011 PICO MACCARRI Barbera d’Asti “Lavignone” $14.95…90 pts-Wine Spectator
-2010 RAPOLINO Barbera d’Alba “Pian Romualdo” $16.95…from one of the greatest Barbera vineyards.
-2008 COPPO Barbera d’Asti “Camp du Rouss” $18.95…90 pts-Wine Advocate
-2009 CABUTTO Barbera d’Alba Superiore $23.95…those with long memories amy remember this as a huge hit at a tasting about 8 months ago. Shocked, happily, it is still around.”

And then we go boldly to bonus land….
Bonus #1-2007 ELIO GRASSO Barbera d’Alba “Vigna Martina” $24.95…a beautiful vineyard site made by one of Piedmont’s top producers.
Bonus #2-2004 CANTINE VALPANE Barbera del Monferrato $29.95…Gorgeous, consumed happily by myself and friends at a recent dinner at Ava Gene’s.
Bonus #3-2009 SOTTIMANO Barbera d’Alba “Pairolero” $30.95…91 pts-Wine Advocate: “…a pure, stunning expression of fruit. This is a fab
