The first weekend of Sept.is the weekend following Labor Day and there are still summer festivals in Chicago, Ill. over the weekend of Sept. 6-7-8, 2013. Rather than the large festivals of Labor Day weekend, this weekend brings unique street fests and ethnic festivals. Following is an overview of the German American Fest and Van Steuben Parade, Little Village Festival, Windy City Wine Festival, The Renegade Craft Fair, Ukrainian Village Fest, Guinness Oyster Fest and Misericordia Family Fest.
Chicago: German American Fest and Van Steuben Parade is by the United Societies of German Americans in Chicago. The fest runs Fri.-Sun., Sept. 6-7-8 at Lincoln Plaza, located at Leland/Western Ave./Lincoln Ave. The parade celebrating Baron Friedrich von Steuben on Sat. starts at 2 p.m.at 4000 N. Lincoln Ave.. The German Day Festival features free German music and dancing. Food and beverages are available.
Chicago: Festival de La Villita (Little Village Festival) is a celebration of Mexican and South-of-the-border culture at 2600 S. Kostner in the Little Village neighborhood being held Fri.-Sun., Sept. 6-8. Highlights include food, arts & crafts, music, carnival rides and kids' entertainment. The Annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade is on Sun. (noon).
Chicago: Windy City Wine Festival is at Buckingham Fountain Fri. (4-10 p.m.) and Sat. (2-8 p.m.). Adult wine tasting tickets are $35 at the door, $10 for designated driver tickets. Event includes wine tastings, food demonstrations and live music.
Chicago: The Renegade Craft Fair is in Wicker Park Sat.-Sun., Sept. 7-8. The fair features over 300 indie crafters, Pop-up vintage market, workshops, food and entertainment.
Chicago: Ukrainian Village Festival is held at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church grounds on Sat.-Sun.
Chicago: Guinness Oyster Fest is in Roscoe Village (Damen & Roscoe) on Sat., Sept. 7 (11 a.m.-10 p.m.). This unique fest features Oysters, fresh seafood and food from local restaurants. Arts and craft booths and live music provide entertainment for the day. The eclectic music lineup includes Irish faves The Tossers, alt-rockers Rusted Root and many more. Suggested donation $7.
Chicago: Misericordia Family Fest is a one day event on Sun., Sept. 8 (11 a.m.-6 p.m.) at 6300 N. Ridge at Devon in Chicago. The event includes family entertainment, live music, Bingo, raffles, craft booths, food and drink booths and more. Live entertainment includes Jesse White Tumblers, Ronald McDonald, Pirates Over 40 (Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band), Irish dancers, Shannon Rovers, Puppet Shows, Frisbee Dogs and more. Admission is $8 adults and $5 children.
