Once again, in preparation for its annual two-week event that will take place in July in the San Luis Obispo area along California’s Central Coast, Festival Mozaic has announced two weekend chamber music events for their WinterMezzo series. Each of these is a Friday-Saturday-Sunday affair, culminating in a 2 p.m. recital on Sunday afternoon. The performance itself is preceded by two social occasions called Notable Encounters. The Friday Encounter, which takes place at 6 p.m., is the INSIGHT event, previewing the concert with a discussion of the works on the program along with demonstrations of the music itself. The Saturday Encounter will be a Salon at a Cambria home for the first concert and a full Dinner at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden for the second. The programs have been prepared and supervised by Music Director and violinist Scott Yoo.
The first event will take place during the weekend of November 1–3. The program will consist of three piano trios for which Yoo will be joined by cellist Bion Tsang and pianist John Novacek. The trios to be performed will be Joseph Haydn’s Hoboken XV/29 in E-flat major, the first (“Ghost”) in D major of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Opus 70 set of two, and Antonín Dvořák’s Opus 90 (“Dumky”) in E minor. The concert will be given at Congregation Beth David in San Luis Obispo, preceded by the INSIGHT event in the Grand Pavilion of the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and the Salon at the home of Andrea and Ashlee Souang in Cambria.
The second event will be held from February 28 through March 2. At the concert Michelle Djokic will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 1012 solo cello suite in D major. She will then join Yoo, violinist Serena McKinney, and violist Hari Bernstein for two string quartets, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s K. 590 in F major and Johannes Brahms Opus 67 in B-flat major. The venue will be the United Methodist Church in San Luis Obispo, and the INSIGHT event will also be held in San Luis Obispo at the King David’s Masonic Lodge. As already mentioned, the dinner will be held at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens and will be followed by an interactive presentation by the musicians.
