Fess Parker, Davy Crockett actor dies at 85 of natural causes. Fess Parker, the actor who played Davy Crockett in the 1950s died Thursday at 85 years old at his home in Santa Ynez Valley, California. Parker's wife, Marcella of 50 years celebrated her 84th birthday Thursday. Friends said that Marcella was devastated, and that Parker was speaking with family members just a few minutes before he died.
Fess Parker starred in several TV series and movies including in Davy Crockett, Old Yeller and Daniel Boone.
Parker retired from acting in the 1970s and opened a successful Santa Barbara winery and resort.
In 1955, after three episodes of the TV series Davy Crockett, it was made into a movie called: Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. Parker, at 6’6” starred in the series.
In 2001, Parker told the Associated Press: “I left the business after 22 years.” “It was time to leave Hollywood. I came along at a time when I’m starting out with Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Sterling Hayden and Gregory Peck.”
“Who needed a guy running around in a coonskin cap?” he said.
Kevin Coburn of Salt Lake City, Utah grew up watching Davy Crockett and had this to say about his death, “Fess Parker was one of those actors that I adored when I was younger. He will be missed.”
