While it may look like a “powerhouse” team on paper for Ferrari, the idea of having Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso driving in tandem may turn out to be a “clash of the titans,” since both former World Champs are pretty much used to being the stars of their teams, and it will be an interesting season seeing if they can work together to take the title away from reigning rival Red Bull.
It is also interesting to note that while Alonso has (up until now) been considered Ferrari’s numero uno driver, it will be Raikkonen who will get to drive the teams’s new 2014 red two-seater on the track first during the first two days of test driving at Jerez late next month.. Alonso will then debut the car during the last two days of the four-day event.
Raikkonen, who is replacing Felipe Massa is coming to Ferrari fresh off recovering from back surgery that prevented him from driving for his former team, Lotus during the last two races of the 2013 season. And while some may question his readiness to race, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is fully confident in his ability.
"Some people are calling it a big risk, but I have been here since the early 70s and I know that risk is something you have to live with in Formula One.I am convinced that Kimi Raikkonen will meet our requirements better than Felipe Massa. He is returning to us because we have new technical regulations next year and we need an experienced driver next to Alonso," he stated.
