As the most romantic day of the year is shortly upon us, there is still time to enchant your loved one with a bottle of exceptional sparkling wine. In the last several months I have been exploring various sparkling wines from both California and Italy. Quite a few have been from Ferrari. My latest discovery is the 2006 Ferrari Perlé and is probably my favorite of the three sparkling wines I have sampled from this vintner.
The wine is dry yet has a sweet taste. The sparkling wine seems more yeasty in the beginning but as I sipped it seemed to dissipate. It is crisp and refreshing. At first I found notes of grapefruit but that soon gave way to lemons and apples with a bit of almond on the finish. Perlé is a mild smoothly balance sparkling wine.
Ferrari Perlé is a Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay that grows on hillside slopes in the Trentino area of Italy. Ferrari is known for their sparkling wines and the high elevation of their vineyards is what produces a very crisp, dry wine. The fruit is hand-harvested. Utilizing the metodo classico, the grapes undergo a gentle pressing with the first fermentation being in tank. Maturation for this wine is around five years on Ferrari's own cultures of yeasts.
A pearl of a sparkling wine, you will not go wrong sharing a bottle with your lover as you celebrate Valentine’s Day.
