Fernangeles Park has a new universally-accessible playground in Sun Valley

The latest masterpiece by Shane's Inspiration is now open in Sun Valley, California at Fernangeles Park. The barn-themed play area is 3,700 square feet and cost $360,000. It was built through a grant from First 5 LA and exceeds even the accessibility requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ramps and walkways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and the climbing beam has a coating that helps with balance. There is a pig shape in the flooring material and other barn animals are outlined in the play space, which includes the cheerful red and white barn color scheme. In addition to climbing, running and swinging there are also musical elements to the playground.

Shane's Inspiration was founded by Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams in 1997 in memory of their son Shane Alexander. Shane only lived a few weeks due to spinal muscular atrophy but his parents realized that if he had lived the average playground would have been impossible for him to use, leaving him out of playing with his peers. The first playground they build is Shane's Inspiration in Griffith Park. Fernangeles Park is the 29th inclusive playground in Los Angeles and all of them have been build by Shane's Inspiration. Fernangeles Park is at 8851 Laurel Canyon Blvd, Sun Valley, CA, 91352 close to where the I-5 and the 170 meet. The fifth and final inclusive playground covered by the grant is being built in Panorama City and is scheduled to open in December.
