Fernanda Lira of Brazilian metal trio, Nervosa, talks 'Victim of Yourself'

Brazil has long been an overlooked hotbed of heavy music and São Paulo is at the heart of the nation’s metal uprising. In 2010, two like-minded musicians, bassist and vocalist Fernanda Lira and guitarist Prika Amaral were searching around for the components of an all-female thrash metal band. Fortuitously they found each other and Nervosa was born. This week, Lira connected with The Examiner to discuss the band’s forthcoming debut album, “Victim of Yourself”.

After releasing a highly-regarded three-track EP in 2012 the band replaced its original drummer with Pitchu Ferraz in 2013 and inked a deal with Napalm. The trio hit the studio to record “Victim of Yourself” which is a bold, stentorian slab of old school thrash with moderns tints and death metal undercurrents.

"Victim Of Yourself", will be released on March 11 in North America via Napalm Records. The production, recording, mixing and mastering were taken care of by Heros Trench and Pompeu, both of the veteran Brazilian metal band Korzus. The recordings took place at the studio Mr. Som, where Nervosa recorded its 2012 "Time Of Death" EP.

This week the band released its first video from the album for the track, “Death” (which can be viewed here). During our 30 minute interview, Lira shares the story behind “Victim of Yourself“, opening up for heroes like Exodus, how the she and Prika handle songwriting, and the three albums which changed her life. She also discusses her vocal inspirations and how bass Gods like Rudy Sarzo, Steve Harris and Steve DiGiorgio impacted her playing.
