On August 21, XO Jane magazine published an article discussing a woman whose picture had been used to produce a hurtful meme. You have probably seen this meme pop up on your Facebook, Tumblr etc. The question becomes, why?
Why can't a woman show that she supports equality for women? Why can't this woman show she supports quality for women and not be model slim? Why do people feel the need to degrade others for a cheap laugh? And why do people laugh?
It's a shame when you're an adult and you still have to deal with bullying. Too bad Facebook does not have anyexercise any control in terms of taking down posts of this nature.Fortunately, the heroine in the story, Kelly Broderick, did not crawl into a shell, and hide. Instead she took to Tumblr creating an account where people can post their "This is what feminism looks like" photos. Men and women have been showing their solidarity for her and a movement that focuses on the equality of women, not to the detriment of men, but the betterment of society.
It's also important to note that being in style and fashionable doesn't always have to be about clothes. It can simply be about standing up for yourself, believing your rights, and being believing you have the right to express yourself.
How have you handled a bully in the past? Feel free to leave a comment.
