The controversial women’s rights group known for their provocative protests of world affairs, has taken to the streets of Hamburg Sunday continuing their adamant disapproval of the city’s sex trade.
According to reports, FEMEN arrived in Hamburg’s red-light district known as Reeperbahn armed with painted faces and wearable sex toys. The group marched their way from Spielbudenplatz to Herbert Street, their bodies painted with Swastikas and Hitler mustaches, gesturing their way down the streets in similar fashion to Hitler’s regime nearly 70 years ago. As the women marched, they were reportedly chanting, “Sex slavery is fascism.” Not so ironic, Hamburg was one of Hitler’s favorite German cities; the ruler visiting the city 33 times up to and during the war.
The three bare-breasted blondes stopped in front of several local sex shops to demonstrate their disdain towards the sex trade, standing on the street shirtless and harnessing a strap-on sex toy. The group stood militant while their painted chests compared the sex trade to fascism.
As unusual as it may seem, today was a normal day for the women of FEMEN. Launching protests worldwide, the group embraces their bare chests, utilizing them as weapons in their campaign against the abuses of women. In fact, some of their bare-breasted protestors were hauled away Sunday in Warsaw where the opening match of the European Football Championships is taking place.
The group made news last month after 23-year-old Yulia Kovpachik toppled the prized Henri Delaunay trophy while it was making its rounds through Europe. While stopped in the capital of Ukraine, Yulia snuck up onto the platform and pushed over the 17 pound trophy which will be awarded to the winner of the EURO 2012. The group was protesting the excessive sex tourism in Amsterdam, which was projected to thrive upon EURO 2012’s arrival.
FEMEN was started by Anna Hutsol in 2008, as a way to empower women activists in the Ukraine. Besides being topless, the group’s goal according to their Facebook page is, "To develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine.”
According to FEMEN, in 2010 the group was considering creating a political party for the next Ukrainian parliamentary election.
