According to the Department of Justice, 25% of women in the United States have experienced some form of physical assault in their lifetime. That calculates to over 960,000 cases of abuse against women per year. At Far East Martial Arts and Fitness in the West Valley, owner and black belt, Sifu Cardinale feels that he owes it to his community to teach women to fight back. He is offering a free self-defense class on Saturday, March 8th at 11AM for any female who wants to learn the basics of self-defense and strategies to use if ever attacked.
Cardinale has been practicing martial arts for over 20 years and seen his share of violence growing up in the Peoria and Phoenix areas. He witnessed abuse against women firsthand during his youth, and now that he has a fiancé and a baby of his own he wants every woman to feel a sense of empowerment when faced with a dangerous or life-threatening situation.
Sifu Cardinale, while large in stature, is known as the “Gentle Giant” by his students. He says, “I make a difference in people's lives, so I look forward to coming in every day and trying to help those who need that extra boost of confidence to get by in this crazy world."
The training class will be held at the studio located in the Fry’s shopping center at 10665 W. Indian School Rd., Suite F in Avondale. The free course will cover different scenarios and techniques to keep women safe regardless of the type of attack that occurs. It is open to all ladies over the age of 10, which means it could be a perfect mother/daughter activity to kick off the weekend.
