Female hair loss highlights an underlying problem, say doctors

Imagine being a woman and constantly hearing astonished comments from those around you:

"Wow! Your hair is just so thin!"
"Your hair is really, really thin. What happened?"
"Your hair is so fine and thin. You should try [insert product here]."
"Your hair is, like, barely there. That's so weird!"
"Are you going bald or something?"

Imagine losing a brush full of hair every time you run the bristles through your strands. Or picture yourself washing your hair, and witnessing handfuls of hair slipping down the drain each and every time. Or trying to style your remaining hair in such a way that it hides circular patches of hair loss.

These are the scenarios that so many women face on a daily basis. But hair loss is not just a superficial problem. When a woman loses her hair, it often signifies a deeper  underlying issue.

  • Stress: Chronic or long-term stress can wreak havoc on your body. If you notice your hair falling out, try a relaxing new hobby, or take a personal vacation.
  • Hair elastics: Too-tight ponytails overuse of hair elastics create a constant pull, and over time, this can cause a condition called traction alopecia. Try gentler styles, or let your hair down for a while.
  • Medications: Chemotherapy, Isotretinoin, and other pharmaceuticals can cause hair loss. If possible, ask your doctor to consider a different medication, or perhaps he or she can adjust the dosage.
  • Hormones: Puberty, menopause, aging, and hyperaldosteronism can all cause hair loss. Your doctor can treat the hair loss associated with each fairly easily.
  • Disease: Hair loss could be your body's way of telling you that you have hypothyroidism, autoimmune disorders, or even certain heart conditions.

The only way to know for sure what's causing your tresse troubles is to ask your doctor. It's not just about your hair; it's about your health . . . and the idea that you should go to great lengths to attain it.
