You're a kid again. You're channeling your inner animal, prancing around the backyard. Maybe you're a giraffe chomping on the leaves at the top of a maple tree. Or maybe you're a lion roaring at the birds swarming overhead. Or maybe you're a kangaroo nestled close to your kin. One thing's for sure: Whatever you are, you're having fun, and you're remembering where you first learned about and watched these animals interact with each other and their surroundings: the Detroit Zoo.
The Detroit Zoo hosts many entertaining activities and events throughout the year for families and adult couples alike. On Aug. 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., take some time for just the two of you at Summer Zoomance, a 21-and-older, after-hours event that’ll make you fall in love with the Detroit Zoo all over again.
Rain or shine, stroll the paths by the Zoo’s award-winning animal habitats. Say hello to your old friends, and meet some fresh faces, too, such as seven new rockhopper penguins, seven-year-old polar bear Nuka, 13-year-old Amur tiger Kolyma, and Mike, Thor and Boo, the three orphaned grizzly cubs rescued from Alaska.
For an advanced admission price of $10 ($12 at the gate) and $5 for parking (free for Detroit Zoo members), you can top off your twilight stroll with live music by The Sun Messengers, the official band of the Detroit Pistons, at the Rackham Fountain, complimentary tram tours of the zoo and animal enrichment and zookeeper talks. Food and adult beverages will be available for purchase from Zoo concession stands, and the Tauber Family Railroad will be in operation for a one-way fare of $3.
