Feeding America said today it will be holding a twitter chat on Thursday, March 21 from 12:00-1:00pm CT to highlight nutrition issues. Feeding America is the nation's largest agency fighting hunger and is celebrating National Nutrition Month during March.
Special guests for the twitter chat include television host Samantha Harris, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and others. You can follow the twitter chat using the hash tag #BetterHealth.
With over 50 million Americans suffering from hunger the Feeding America network of food banks is under great strain. Part of the challenge is to get nutritious foods to those in need so they do not suffer health consequences.
The Feeding America network distributes around 3.4 billion pounds of food a year, with 800 million pounds of fresh produce included.
Bob Aiken, the president of Feeding America, says, "We endeavor to provide our clients with food emphasized in the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines, such as fruits and vegetables, protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, as these types of food are often out of reach for many of the families we serve.”
“The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ vision of optimizing the nation’s health through food and nutrition is strengthened each March as we celebrate National Nutrition Month. As registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered, we are able to translate sound science-based research into helpful information that people can understand and apply to their everyday lives,” says Academy President Ethan A. Bergman.
