Toss some food in a bowl, place it on the floor, and within 30 seconds your dog has probably gulped it down. What happens next? For some dogs 30 seconds is the only time they will eat in one day. Wild K9’s are constantly searching for food. Domestic pets that are fed once or twice a day are left with a considerable amount of time that can cause boredom issues. Providing them with opportunities to forage for their food stimulates their mind and allows them to be entertained.
How to Engage Your Dog in Foraging
Watch this video by the Exotic Bird Hospital, Inc. that shows the fun and natural way you can engage your dog in foraging behavior. Dr. Annie Massey, DVM “discusses the benefits of foraging and how to get started.” Watch as Brisco the dog occupies himself without any encouragement from Dr. Massey. As soon as she places the foraging toy on the ground he instantly begins to seek food from inside the toy.
What are Foraging Balls or Toys?
Dr. Eric Barchas wrote in Foraging Balls May Help Reduce Unwanted Behaviors in Dogs and Cats--and Pigs, “Foraging balls release food slowly over time. This keeps the animal busy, interested, and happy as he works to retrieve his meal” (Dogster, 2013). The different foraging toys available are:
• Kong (comes in all sizes for every dog breed and weight). It can be stuffed with anything and frozen for long lasting entertainment. The Kong comes in varying shapes with varying dispensing techniques. Do your research to find the best one for your dog.
• Treat Releasing Bottle. This can have a rope attached for playing and has a twist cap for filling with your treat of choice. This also comes in varying shapes and sizes.
Does your dog engage like Brisco? Purchase a Kong or other item shown in this video and share with me how your dog engaged with his new treat dispensing toy.
