The Obama administration announced today the federal government will recognize the marriages of more than 1300 same-sex couples in the State of Utah, granting federal marriage benefits to those couples who took advantage of a ruling by Federal District Court judge Robert Shelby making same-sex unions in the state legal last December 20.
Attorney General Eric Holder posted a video stating, “I am confirming today that, for the purposes of federal law, these marriages will be recognized as lawful and considered eligible for all relevant federal benefits on the same terms as other same-sex marriages.” He also said, “These families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds.”
Following a stay granted by the Supreme Court of the United States on January 6 in favor of the State, Utah Governor Gary Herbert reinstated Amendment 3 of the Utah Constitution on January 8 which declares marriage is between one man and one woman only. This action put all of the marriages between same-sex couples that were done legally in limbo.
