FedEx has a distinct vision for the proposed mega-hub in Allen Township, which is an expansion of the existing facilities that border the Lehigh Valley International Airport. The Airport's authority, is selling FedEx the land that they will use for the Allen Township expansion, to help pay off its legal debts. The parcel is currently farmland, but is zoned for industrial use.

The corporate package deliver sees the distribution center as greatly increasing the tax revenue for the township, the mail volume--being able to handle 75,000 packages a hour--will eventually see more than 3,000 people working there at its peak. The construction alone for the $325 million project will create 700 jobs and, the subsequent consolidation of three other local FedEx facilities will eventually mean relocating another 100 jobs to the plant.

Opponents of the mega-hub and concerned citizens, still feel that the traffic and noise will make life miserable, and voiced their concerns at the Allen Township Planning Commission meeting on Monday.

While FedEx still has details and issues to handle, they are further along than their opponents would like. The company is waiting for approval from the planning commission and board of supervisors. It is also inquiring to see in the PA Dept. of Transportation would help cover the cost of some of the roadway improvements.
