The Lehigh Valley, home to over 800,000 residents, is a central location for distribution centers because it is within a truck drive to over 60 million US citizens in various states along the East Coast..
FedEx Ground has decided to take advantage of this by expanding its facilities north of the Lehigh Valley International Airport (LVIA) on Willowbrook Road and Race Street. This expansion, as proposed, would involve adding two nearby warehouses to what already exists. on land recently acquired from the LVIA
The new sorting center could handle 15,000 packages per hour and would add 14,000 more cars and trucks to the roadway, leading to an expansion of the traffic lanes surrounding the center; Airport Road, Race Street and Willowbrook Road.
According to the plan submitted to the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission (LVPC), the traffic expansion alone would cost $25 million. The new distribution plant would also bring 800 more jobs to Allen Township and cost over $175 million once completed.
The 1.3 million square feet distribution center is scheduled to be completed by early 2015, and would be completed in two phases. The first phase would add a 1 million square feet building and then a 300,000 square feet building would be added later to create a L-shaped mega-hub.that will compete with UPS Ground.
